Korfball South Australia is pleased to announce the inaugural Challenge Cup will be played over 3 weeks on 17th June, 24th June & 1st July at Titanium Arena in place of State League A grade games. Both B and C grade State League games will be played as usual during this time. This ensures the A Grade is brought into line with the B and C Grade in playing 12 matches each, while allowing new rules and concepts to be trialled.

These games are not State League games and do not count towards games played, registration fees, finals eligibility, goal scoring tallies or MVP voting for the State League season. The Challenge Cup is a stand-alone competition and the results will not impact State League in any way. As these games are not part of State League, the associated competition rules (registrations, uniforms, player movement etc) do not apply although all players do still need to be registered for insurance purposes. The matches still appear on State League schedules for ease of scheduling, but will not appear on any State League results lists. Instead, all Challenge Cup information can be found on the brand new Challenge Cup page.

The following rules will apply for all Challenge Cup matches:

Timing

  • 4 x 10 minute quarters
    • 1 minute quarter time, three quarter time and full time break, 5 minute half time
  • Shot clock (still 25 seconds) starts when the attacking team takes possession of the ball, even when possession is gained in defense

Scoring

  • At the conclusion of a match, regardless of the score, golden goal will be played
    • Winner of golden goal receives one bonus Challenge Cup point
  • All goals scored from beyond the marked “double line” (8-9 meters) will be awarded two points*
  • Successful “buzzer beaters” (ball in air when buzzer sounds) will be awarded two points*
  • Change of end will occur after two goals are scored, regardless of how many points have been scored
  • No defended shot will be called on moving shots
  • Penalties and free passes are to be taken by the player who earns the call, at the referee’s discretion
    • All penalties are worth 1 point regardless of where it is earned

*Maximum of two points can be awarded for any goal.

Players

  • There is no limit on substitutions throughout the game, but they can only occur at a stoppage in play (at a whistle)^
  • A bonus Challenge Cup point will be awarded to any team that has 12 or more players take the court in a game^
  • Any A grade players may not transfer between clubs during Challenge rounds

^As these games are not State League, we encourage teams to include ‘up and coming’ players into their rotation as it will not impact player movement regulations in B/C Grade games.

Referees

  • 2 referees will whistle each game with no assistant referee (linesman) involved
  • Each referee will be considered the controlling referee of a single division for the entire game and will make all final decisions in that division
  • Both referees may make calls at any point during the game, regardless of division

Challenge Points

  • Challenge points (ladder points) will be awarded as follows:
    • Win**=3 points
    • Draw**=2 points
    • Loss**=1 point
    • 12+ players=1 bonus point
    • Golden Goal=1 bonus point

**At the end of golden goal

The winning team will be awarded the Challenge Cup before their game in Week 10 of State League competition, the week after the challenge.
