Last weekend saw yet another hugely successful Summer Classic, with 8 teams and over 70 players braving the warmer than expected conditions to produce a wonderful tournament. The day was a fantastic exhibition of Korfball, filled with fun, sportsmanship and social interaction you don’t often get during State League rounds. This is a credit to everyone who took part, it was your enthusiasm and conduct which made the day so enjoyable for all involved.

It was great to see Korfball South Australia well represented, with 7 teams from the 5 Adelaide club based teams, marking the first time two clubs have both entered two teams. It was also pleasing to see Sydney once again make the trip down for the tournament, for their 6th trip to this annual tournament, the most of any interstate team. There is a lot of respect for the effort these that goes into travelling for this competition each year, and it’s always good to play against new opponents. We look forward to seeing Sydney, as well as hopefully other interstate clubs, at next years edition.

The number of teams this year necessitated a pool structure, with round robin games being played within each pool, before cross-over games to determine the finals make up. North and Flinders topped their pools respectively, going through all round robin matches undefeated. However, when it came time for the cross-over games, both teams dropped one match each, meaning that there were 4 teams all on 4 wins, and 1 loss. After some quick calculations by the tournament organisers, it was determined that North and Arista Red had qualified for the final on goal difference, with Flinders and Sydney just missing out.

The final was a fantastic match, especially considering the toll the day’s previous games had taken. The final went on to produce the day’s only draw after regulation was over, meaning that golden goal was required to crown a victor. North emerged victorious, breaking Arista’s streak of 5 consecutive Summer Classic titles. Congratulations to North, it was a well deserved win. Full details can be found here.

Thanks goes to Korfball South Australia League Directors (and tournament organisers) Jess Phillips and Theresa Coletti for putting together such an enjoyable tournament, and running it on the day as well.

We look forward to the next iteration of the tournament, and hope to see everyone out there again next year.
