What is Korfball?
Korfball is a mixed gender court game similar to Netball or Basketball. The court is divided in half with the “korf” (goal post) positioned 1/3 of the distance from the backline (you can run and shoot from behind the korf)! A Korfball team consists of 8 players (4 Males and 4 Females), 2 Males and 2 Females take the attacking half and 2 Males and 2 Females take the defending half, this definitive structure is required as Males can only defend Males and Females can only defend Females. The key difference to Netball or Basketball is that an attacker is not allowed to shoot if their defender is within arms length of them, this creates a very different style of court movement and playing strategy. The other noticeable difference in this game is the height of the korf, at 3.5m (11.5ft) it is 1.5 feet higher than a Basketball ring (and no backboard). This video gives a useful overview of the sport.
