The first attempt to establish Korfball on a ‘permanent’ basis was by Roy Kirkby in 1978 at Scotch College, Adelaide where he had commenced teaching. He used House senior students who gave a lunchtime demonstration and the students then organised a short lunchtime competition involving all the Houses.

After just a few weeks there arose an opportunity for Scotch students to introduce korfball in the local community at a new sports centre at Blackwood. A number of local young people showed interest, including Richard Garrett, then a trainee Physical education teacher. Over the next eighteen months or so, Richard and Roy ran a session every Sunday afternoon hoping to attract more players. Eventually, after that period of time we had enough for two teams then before long four teams and we were able to commence a competition.
